The Sisterhood

December 9, 2016 By Jeanne Selander Miller Leave a Comment

Sisterhood During the months from May to October, when I am not in Florida writing, I own and operate a restaurant in Old Forge, New York called Sisters Bistro. And just like the name implies my biological sister is my business partner. Sisters Bistro was created out of the vision and bond of two sisters. It is a wonderful place, with wonderful staff and customers, wonderful food and drink, even if I do blow my own horn.
What does it mean to be a sister? To me it means that we love each other no matter what. We are not carbon copies of one another. Anyone who knows us both knows this to be true. We share some ideals and on other issues we can respectively agree to disagree.
But no matter what– being a sister is inviolate, it is a sacred bond of support. I have her back and she has mine. It is understood. If someone or something hurts her, it hurts me too. It must have been something in the alignment of the stars that brought us together in the same family and I am forever grateful.
There are many kinds of sisters, just as there are many kinds of families. Some of these relationships are based on biology and some are of our own choosing. For this reason, I am still trying to wrap my head around the last election and how women could possibly have voted against their own self interest and the interest of the sacred sisterhood.
Depending upon which exit poll is used, how could 50% of women who actually voted in this democracy possibly have voted for someone with so little regard for women that he said,
“When you’re a star they let you do it …grab them by the …
you can do anything.” Donald J Trump President Elect
What could we (the collective sisterhood) possibly be thinking? If Mr. Trump thinks he can sexually assault women when he is a star, just what the hell do you think he might be capable of now that he slated to take over the most powerful position in the world?
Come on sisters, together we can do better than this. We owe it to ourselves, we owe it to one another and we owe it to our daughters.
Speak your truth—I just did.
